An unusual set of ten Dieppe ivory plaques after Jacques Callot (1592 – 1635)
The plaques depict panoramic scenes from the famous series of eighteen etchings known as ‘The Miseries and Misfortunes of War’. The series was first published in 1633 and was Callot’s best known work. It was considered by many as an early prototypical French comic strip.
The work portrayed the conflict of the Thirty Years’ War and includes a title page along with subsequent verses below each image written by the famous print collector Michel de Marolles.
Here they are mounted in an 18th century ebonised and moulded frame and exquisitely executed with finely engraved blackened lines on ten rectangular plaques.
Jacques Callot (French: c. 1592 – 1635) was an important figure in the history of printmaking and lived on the border of France and South West Germany, formally known as the Dutchy of Lorraine
