17th century Spanish cabinet on stand
A Spanish ivory, tortoiseshell and ebony inlaid cabinet on original stand with barley twist legs and marquetry base.
The cabinet is formed of an arrangemnet of inlaid ivory and tortoiseshell drawers, each one intricately engraved depicting hunting scenes.
In the center is an ornate door of architectural design that opens to reveal a further three drawers beneath. The central door is embellished with decorative features; a pediment is supported by two bronze figures that flank a finely carved ivory plaque. The ivory plaque depicts the last of the sorrows of the mourning Virgin next to Jesus’ cross and bears a latin inscription at its base. Above the plaque is a monogram, presumably that of a previous owner.
Two deeper drawers are on either side of the cabinet, also with an architectural design. Each one has a small oil painting in the middle depicting a religious figure.
A cabinet of this type would of represented the height of exclusivity and status in the 17th century, this is a fine example.
The cabinet is finished ontop with five ivory finials
