A late medieval grotesque
A 14th – 15th century Late medieval English Gothic grotesque.
A decorative corbel carved from fine grained limestone in the form of a male head with elongated ears surrounded by foliage.
Various interpretations include that of a prisoner depicted with a shakle round his neck, perhaps attached to a Pillory (Pellori) for a public humiliation. Dutch refer to a ‘Schandpaal’
